contract

My top tip to any new private teacher would be to get a policy drawn up with your students. Everyone will be much happier for it! Pupils and parents need to know how you run things and your business will benefit from establishing some ground rules.

A feature I love about Music Teacher’s Helper is the “studio policy” web page that is part of the included music teacher website package. This gives us an opportunity to explain to prospective students, who might want to register for lessons, how we run our teaching businesses.

When I first started giving private music lessons I had no contract with my students. Things were casual. Some weeks pupils would turn up and pay for that lesson, other weeks they didn’t. It became very frustrating as I waited to see whether they would attend and pay and as a consequence, my earnings were extremely erratic. I began to quickly realise that I needed a solution otherwise I would simply run out of steam. Enter the contract!

I remember the night before I was planning to present my newly drawn-up contract to my students I was feeling rather anxious. What if they didn’t like the idea of a formal agreement? We hope you had an excellent week of teaching! Last week, we introduced Stripe as a newly available payment method. Let us know in the comments if you’ve created a Stripe account yet. This week, the following improvements and fixes were made:

  • Corrected an issue that synced iCal and Google calendars 1 hour off from the correct time in some cases.
  • Updated the website preferences to make it easier to input correct URL format.
  • Modified the mileage tracker repeat options so that the repeat options are available when editing a mileage record (before they were available only when creating a record).
  • Updated the ordering of columns in the csv export of the Fees Charged list to match the table that appears on the site.
  • Corrected an issue with manually generated invoices so that they have the correct time stamp according to user’s preferences.
  • Updated the behavior of the Parent’s “Back to Reports List” link on the “Account Summary” page so that the parent is linked to the expected page “Reports List”, instead of home or login.
  • Made improvements to the calendar syncing function so that it is faster, and will reflect changes more quickly.

Also, Music Teacher’s Helper is getting a new, enhanced look that will make you even more organized and productive. No date announced yet, but we’re working hard and can’t wait to show you.

Music teaching apps

Several weeks back, we updated the Music Teacher’s Helper iPhone app to include invoice creation, editing, and printing. That ability will come shortly to the Android app in the next update. The app comes with your Music Teacher’s Helper account at no additional cost. The information syncs instantly to your desktop account, and vice versa. It can be a real help if you’re away from your studio.

Other fixes:

  • Corrected a set of bugs causing inconsistent dates formats on invoices.
  • Allowed saving of file names containing an apostrophe.
  • Made updates for a couple dozen improvements requested by the Quality and Assurance Team.

Let us know if you have any questions by emailing support – support@musicteachershelper.com. Happy teaching!
