Using MTH creatively Part V – “I’m Late!”

“I’m late!
I’m late!
For a very important date!
No time to say “Hello”, goodbye!
I’m late!
I’m late!”Picture of White Rabbit with I'm Late
Part of the lyrics sung by the White Rabbit from the song “I’m Late” in Alice in Wonderland

Do your students run late?

Late students are inevitable. It is usually the same students that run late on a regular basis.

This can be stressful for instructors as it crunches the already limited time you have with the student.

Ideas on ways to eliminate late students:

1. Lesson reminders sent from MTH may help with this issue. Remind parents and students to arrive 5 minutes prior to start time in the reminder notes. Unless you have flexibility built into your schedule, let them know tardiness does limit their lesson time as one needs to stay on schedule.

2. Another way I help these tardy students is to schedule their computer time before their lesson. It’s not a problem if they are late to their computer time as I instruct them to enter quietly, and to go directly to the computer while I am teaching the student preceding their lesson at the piano. This gets them into the studio before their lesson at the piano begins.

Using MTH creatively to help record tardiness:

Some teachers like to track tardiness for many reasons. This can be handy if you need to discuss the issue with a parent, especially older students that are responsible to get themselves to the lesson on time.

One of the easiest ways to track and easily view any changes to lessons before or after the lesson is to edit the title and change the category.

Even while setting attendance at the home page, you may change the (section where it shows the students name) to say things such as: Emily Arrived 8:35 (delete last name or any other comments you do not need). Idea: Note the arrival time instead of saying late, which has a negative connotation.

If you wish to indicate a late arrival in your lessons notes you may do so. Have your lesson notes set to state “This lesson on such date at ___ time was attended (followed by the title)”. This should indicate the student arrived after the time the lesson was scheduled to begin.

You may create and print an invoice if you want to show the parent a list of late dates from previous months.

Also using the categories option with color coding. such as “Student Late” allows you to quickly find those lessons to which students were on mth calendar - late

Just for fun, the rest of the lyrics:
I’m late! I’m late! And, when I wave I lose the time I save My fuzzy ears and whiskers took me too much time to shave
I run and then I hop hop hop
I wish that I could fly
There’s danger if I dare to stop and here’s the reason why
You see I’m overdue
I’m in a rabbit stew
Can’t even say “Good-bye”, hello
I’m late, I’m late, I’m late
No, no, no, no, no, no, no!
I’m overdue!
I’m really in a stew!
No time to say “Goodbye”, hello!
I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!
May the rest of your day be filled with beautiful music!
